Preventing Suicide & Supporting Mental Health in Students

When students feel safe and that they belong, they become more connected to each other and the world around them. When they feel connected, they are less likely to bully others and more likely to achieve academically, socially and emotionally. At Rachel’s Challenge, we create change. We know that hope is the antidote to fear. We know that kindness is contagious, that compassion connects us, that empathy can end isolation.

Our approach is proactive, preventative intervention for bullying, school violence and self-harm, with a focus on social-emotional programs that improve connection and mental health. We teach these positive tools and skills to address the causes of bullying and self-harm directly at the source: we don’t treat the symptoms; we cure the disease. Our pro-kindness, suicide prevention programs are proven to create a positive school culture, leading to safer schools and emotionally resilient students.

A Preventable Disaster

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 10-24. And, it’s preventable.

The teen suicide statistics are alarming. Pre-COVID (2019) numbers from the CDC show that 18.8% of High School students have seriously contemplated suicide; 8.9% have actually attempted it. Post-COVID preliminary data suggests an increase of several times may be likely.

In another recent national survey, 1 out of 6 teens had seriously considered taking their own life.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs help students build the life skills they need to function and succeed in a rapidly changing and challenging world. Skills like empathy, self-confidence, decision-making, and resilience – all of which stem from different levels of self and social awareness.
